Depression in Women
Many women suffer from depression, but most don't know or haven't been able to pinpoint what is wrong. The causes vary greatly from post partum, to menopause, and for those of us in the north and south, a Vitamin D deficiency (also known as Seasonal Affected Disorder or S.A.D.) It became apparent to me during my second year of college when I was in my early 20's that I had a hard time coping during January and February. It wasn't until a few years later that I discovered that S.A.D was a problem for many people, especially those who live in areas that have limited hours of daylight. Many of us work in enviorments lit by artificial light, and when the work day starts and ends in the dark, it is hard for our bodies to be in the sun enough to get the vitamin D we require. Post Partum Depression and Menopause can also be causes of depression in women. Whatever the cause there are many non perscription remedies that can help. I have spent the last 10 years managing through a few simple steps. 1st I keep my life organized and flowing smoothly, that doesn't mean everything is perfect. I simply do the things that need to be done everyday (like laundry, cleaning, coffee with friends) whatever it is that makes life easy and enjoyable. I try not to procrastinate!! Then when unexpected things arise, the basics are looked after so that time and energy can be devoted to dealing with the unexpected. 2nd I keep a support network. I keep in contact with the Power of the Universe - whom I call God -, my family and my friends. Keeping feelings of lonliness at bay helps to keep symptoms of depression at bay as well. 3rd I am honest with myself about needing help. Sometimes it might take a while, but I do try to evaluate my mental health and my ability to keep it healthy regularly. By the time my second child turned one, I had to turn to my doctor for professional advice and help. This is not a bad thing, nor do I think it will be permanent. Just a reality. I love my son, but my pregancy and the year since his birth took a toll on me physically and mentally. Part of my proactive approach to my mental health is admitting when I cannot do it alone. There are lots of resources to access about symptoms, support and cures. I am simply encouraging you to do it and find the help and support you need to be able to wake up and go to bed with a smile more days than not. |
